the mission

Cosplay for Science is a nonprofit educational initiative dedicated to making science accessible through cosplay. We aim to lower perceived barriers between scientists and the public, effectively communicate science through the lens of popular culture, and to subsequently demonstrate the efficacy of our science communication initiatives through data collection, research, and published results.

origin STORY

Cosplay for Science is a science communication initiative created to help make science education more relatable and scientists more approachable. We started this project in October 2017 after attending our first comic con, Nerdbot-Con in Pasadena, California. Since all of us come from different backgrounds as well, we want to help bring science to the communities that need it the most.  Many people don’t realize how much science is a part of the many things they love. So what we do is connect the worlds. By cosplaying, we hope to get people’s attention and then explain a cool science fact. With so many fandoms out there, we can talk about gravity, space flight, chemistry, evolution, the list goes on and on! Also, by cosplaying, we hope to make people less afraid or anxious about talking to scientists. In the end, our biggest goal is just to get people to appreciate the science in their everyday lives.

“What if we could inspire critical thinking and help audiences learn to ask the right kind of questions not just in fantasy worlds, but also in the real world.”
